Covic bracing for white-hot Wanderers

Perth Glory goalkeeper Ante Covic is confident he won't get swept away with emotion when he confronts his former side Western Sydney in Saturday night's A-League clash at nib Stadium.

Covic was the hero of Western Sydney's title-winning campaign at the 2014 Asian Champions League, but he was released by the club just six months later.

The 40-year-old has settled in the West, and he'll get the chance to show his former club what they're missing when they lock horns on Saturday night.

"I've got history with them, and it's history I'll never forget," Covic said.

"But the most important thing to me is another three points for Perth Glory.

"For me come Saturday, I'd be the happiest guy on the field if I didn't have to touch the ball once.

"While it will be a special feeling in a sense to play against the Wanderers, I won't let it affect me mentally.

"I've had 20 years of football. You know not to let things get into your head, or get over-emotional."

Covic has been a strong contributor for Perth this season, and he doesn't have plans to retire anytime soon.

"Five years ago people were telling me I was too old, and I've probably had the best five years since then," Covic said.

"So why can't I keep going?

"I know a lot of people will just look at the number (40) and make assumptions on that. But it is just a number."

Glory are riding high after wins over Central Coast and Melbourne Victory.

But that pales into comparison to the Wanderers, who have surged four points clear on top of the table following seven straight wins.

The Wanderers have beaten fellow title contenders Victory and Brisbane Roar over the past fortnight, and they'll start as hot favourites against a Glory outfit riddled by injuries.

Free kick specialist Nebojsa Marinkovic became the latest concern for Perth after he injured his hamstring in Wednesday night's 1-0 win over Victory.
