Perth Glory fans may be jumping with excitement over the sides penalty shootout triumph over the Western Sydney Wanderers to reach the FFA Cup semi-finals, however they should not jump to any conclusions following last season’s salary cap scandal.
Perth have managed to snatch victory in their last three FFA Cup clashes, which have all turned out to be tight affairs.
Two penalty shootout victories and an extra-time winner by Chris Harold are all that Perth has been able to achieve in the FFA Cup. This may be impressive in other circumstances but the quality of Perth’s opposition must be questioned.
The two penalty shootout victories came against the teams who finished last and second last in the previous season. These tight games did not show a gulf in class between the Glory and its opponents. This will be troubling for Kenny Lowe.
Also, the extra-time victory came against Lions FC, a NPL side. These types of victories are far from impressive and everyone involved with the Glory should be careful before getting carried away.
